Lexus has been granted permission to accept bitcoin payments for its own financial services.
The company said it was pleased to have secured the right to operate alongside its existing customers.
“We believe bitcoin offers a more secure and convenient way of conducting financial transactions, especially for businesses, which need to move money around quickly and efficiently,” said Niklas Linden, head of Lexus Financial.
The decision comes after the UK Financial Conduct Authority granted the company permission to use the technology for its financial services, as well as for those for which it does not have an agreement with a third party.
The Lexus-backed bitcoin payment service is now available in the UK and the US, but it is not yet available to people outside of the UK.
The financial service is also offering a separate bitcoin-to-euro conversion service for UK residents.
It is not clear when the service will launch, but in an email to customers, the company said: “We will continue to explore opportunities for bitcoin payments in the future.”
